Selassie Atadika X Nobelhart & Schmutzig, 4th of September 2024

“We try to dispel the myths that the cuisines of the continent are one note and unrefined. We also try to highlight the diversity and history behind it. For such a massive continent there is so little known about the cuisine. We offer a gateway to the journey to one of the last culinary frontiers.”
If there’s anyone who might be considered the face of African Cuisine, it’s Selassie Atadika, a chef, activist and former United Nations employee hailing from Ghana. Selassie’s approach to cooking, New African Cuisine – her interpretation of the best parts of the cuisines of the continent where culture, community and cuisine interplay with the environment, sustainability and the economy – sheds light on both the economic and cultural dimensions of food systems in Africa. We find this holistic perspective incredibly captivating and could not be more excited to be welcoming Selassie to Nobelhart on ***.
Selassie first left her mark on the world of gastronomy as one of the co-founders of Trio Toque, Dakar’s first nomadic restaurant. Her current project, Midunu in Accra, fuses culinary innovation with an ambitious educational vision. With her all-female team, Selassie restricts herself to using only local and seasonal ingredients, including traditional grains and proteins. Nonetheless, Midunu aims to paint a more complete picture of Africa, far beyond European clichés. To this end, Selassie and her team host various dining experiences. In addition, they’ve created an ethically sourced line of chocolate products.
Our dinner with Selassie will feature six select courses – including, of course, her famous 100% Ghanaian chocolates that round off every meal. While she might well bring a few more signature ingredients with her, she’ll be working mostly with our “vocally local” produce from Berlin Brandenburg and her own methods of preparation. Be advised though that this is not a classic “four hands” dinner: Selassie is going to do whatever she feels like, and us Nobelharts are going to support and contribute as required. What that’s going to look like? Your guess is as good as ours. But that’s perhaps exactly why you should pencil this special event into your calendar.
By the way: We’re splitting Selassie’s travel costs with Basel’s Steinbeisser, where Selassie will be preparing a joint dinner with Turkish chef Elif Oskan. If you happen to be in Switzerland, you won’t want to miss this!
