Wine tasting September 24, 2022: Old Rhone wines with Uwe Bende
When amateurs talk about “old” wines, they’re talking perhaps five or ten years. We’re talking 50, give or take. We’d have closed shop by now if we weren’t pros, but when it comes to old wines, there is a different level of expertise entirely. That is precisely the realm of Uwe Bende, one of the foremost authorities in the field of mature wines. On occasion of our first wine tasting in 2022, Uwe will be glad to share both his knowledge as well as a few special bottles from his legendary collection. Come for his notes on maturation and taste, stay for his incredible knowledge of the history (and, indeed, the stories) behind the bottles. Expect a detective story or two, too. After all, the job of a dealer specialising in old wines is as much tasting as it is ascertaining authenticity and provenance. As you can see: this is nerd level 11 out of 10.
In terms of origin, we’ll be limiting ourselves to old wines from the Rhone region. Conveniently, our sommelier Alexander Seiser just spent a very well lubricated five days educating himself on the finer points of Rhone viniculture. He’ll be hosting the tasting together with Uwe and present to you a few special bottles from our very own cellar. Micha will prepare his signature ten course supper which definitely won’t exactly pair with the wines, but that is just the way it is.
Apero:
Les Revenants Brut Nature, 09/21 Champagne Etienne Calsac, Champagne
Furthermore…
2015 Les Roulier, Domaine Richard Leroy, Loire
2011 Saint Joseph blanc, Dard & Ribo, Rhone (Magnum)
2013 Hermitage rouge, Dard & Ribo, Rhone
1969 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Hurlevant. Rhone
1964 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Jean Barrot, Rhone

1964 Cornas Chante Perdrix, Audibert & Delas (Maison Delas Freres), Rhone

1961 Cote Rotie, Audibert & Delas (Maison Delas Freres), Rhone
2017 Le Banyuls de Moman en Amphore, Bruno Duchene Vignerons, Cotes du Roussillon
We’ll also be serving schnapps by Christoph Keller’s legendary Stählemühle.
There will be 17 bottles in total.
And just as a heads up: things don’t always pan out in the world of wine. An old bottle (as much as any bottle, really) might be corked. Well, we’ll be sharing our joys as well as our sorrows, but just in case we’ll have some alternatives at hand.
