A newer, younger Piedmont – an evening with Marta Rinaldi & Philine Isabelle Dienger

12. Oct 2023

In the often staunchly traditionalist world of Italian wine, elderly gentlemen with red noses and a sense of “we’ve always done it like this” still reign supreme. But new, exciting things are on the rise–even in a region that likes to pair “tradition” with a side of “convention.”

On November 30, we’ve got the immense honour to introduce you to two wineries from Piedmont’s Barolo who are really changing the game. There are sisters Marta and Carlotta Rinaldi who took over the legendary Giuseppe Rinaldi winery upon their father Beppe’s death in 2018. And then we’ve got  Philine Isabelle Dienger –– and no, that is not an Italian name, Philine is about as German as we are. Her first own vintage came out in 2019. Conveniently, she is the girlfriend of Marta Rinaldi, so we were delighted to be able to get them to come to Berlin together.

About the wineries:

What could we possibly say about that most classic of Barolis, Giuseppe Rinaldi? It’s always good, and it’s always expensive. Yet, there is more to be discovered for sure––as of late, Rinaldi’s wines have become even much more elegant and filigree, appearing almost pinot-esque and reminiscent, perhaps, of wines from Burgundy. There isn’t much of the powerful, mighty, tannin-rich wines of the Piedmont about them at all. The same is true for Philine’s wines which, although young, have already come into their own. Both wineries are united by an innovative biodynamic approach; a novelty among the very old school ways of the Piedmont.

On Saturday, December 2nd you should be sure to visit the Jubiläums Weinparty 4.0 at the brand new Fotografiska Berlin at Oranienburgerstraße. The Freiheit Vinothek will present a variety of wines by 40 different vintners. Food is provided.
