29th of January 2022, Wine evening with Sept winery

10. Dec 2021

In January 2020 Billy travelled to Beirut, just on the heels of the peaceful protests that had gripped the country for months. The tension was still palpable, says Billy – but what truly impressed him was the people’s joie de vivre in the face of difficulty. He perceived this, too, in the wines he sampled at Maher Harb’s Sept winery. Maher isn’t just the first and only biodynamic winemaker in all of Lebanon, but the grapes he works with embody different facets of a country that is full of contrasts. On the one hand, Maher grows Syrah and Viognier, remnants of Lebanon’s time under French mandate. On the other, he tends to his “secret garden” of autochthonous Lebanese varieties: his Merwah and Obediah are sourced from old, long forgotten vines on the lands of people in Assia, Bchaaleh and Douma. Even if Maher’s first vintage was only in 2016, we feel it’s time you got to know  these surprisingly fresh wines full of distinct style – and the courage of the man behind it all!

Not yet convinced? Then don’t take it from us, but from Jancis Robinson, the grande dame of the wine world.
