If you’re smart, you’re going to do what Billy does to put his mother-in-law in a good mood come Christmas Eve: crack open a bottle or three of something properly old and fortified. Indeed, aged Madeira is a truly uplifting beverage. And since the world’s best son-in-law doesn’t want you to miss out on the particularly exquisite, aged bottles created by Vinhos Barbeito, it is a great honour for us to be able to invite Ricardo Freitas for our first wine evening of 2024. 

Run by the same family since 1946, Vinhos Barbeito remains dedicated to the creation of distinctive and authentic Madeira. One of their specialities is their “Frasqueiras” line – bottles that are left to mature for more than 20 years, making for fuller, caramelised and concentrated wines. Former history teacher Ricardo took over the company in 1992; he prides himself on fusing the time-honoured methods of his family with modern techniques. Barbeito wines are aged in three different warehouses with different climatic conditions, allowing each variety and blend of grape to shine. However, there is one thing all Barbeito wines have in common: even the oldest bottle still boasts a delicious and delightful fresh acidity.
